Botanisches Bilderbuch für Jung und Alt [ARCHIVED]

Learning languages is great way to expand your understanding of the natural world. German, a language of Europe, is a great language to learn since Germany is one of the leaders in the world in pharmaceutical and botanical science. This book, ‘Botanisches Bilderbuch für Jung und Alt‘ or ‘Botanical Book for Young and Old‘, is hosted by the Wikimedia foundation and contains illustrations plants and their corresponding names in German and Latin, albeit low resolution. This book was published in 1897 and the authors are Franz Bley and H. Bedrow.

In the image above, you can see in the middle row far left column: ‘Sommer- oder Stiel-Eiche‘ , Quercus pedunculata. This appears to be the old latin name for Quercus robur, also known in English as the English Oak. ‘Eiche‘ is the German word for Oak. A direct translation of the image’s description would be, ‘Summer- or Peduncle-Oak‘.
